Fidelio

Opéra de Lyon & Artist Gary Hill

Roll: Visual Design Development and 3D Animation

The artist was commissioned by the opera house to re-imagine “Fidelio”, Beethoven’s only opera. He intertwined the story of '“Fidelio” with Harry Martinson’s 1956 book, “Aniara”, creating an intergalactic space opera of sorts. It placed the stage (and even the opera house itself), inside the halls of a doomed spaceship, marooned in the vastness of space. The artist hired a small team (myself, Reilly Donovan & Ian Hubert) to accompany him to Lyon France, where we worked to develop and produce animated visuals to be projected during the performance. I worked closely with the artist and technicians to achieve the desired visual experience as well as fulfill technical requirements of the production.

“…Glass-like is the stare encircling us and the systems of stars hang frozen and still in the round crystal windows of our ship.”

-Excerpt from the book, “Aniara” by Harry Martinson

“We pull in traces, pictures, landscapes, scraps of language being spoken someplace, only where?”

-Excerpt from the book, “Aniara” by Harry Martinson
